A Personal Word

One of the most difficult choices anyone will ever make is the decision of whether to place one’s parent or other elderly loved one in a long-term care facility.  I witnessed this first-hand with my father, an only child, and the struggle he faced with my grandmother, an Alzheimer’s victim.  Fortunately, for my father, the choice he made of a nursing home was a good one, because my grandmother received the best of care possible during the remainder of her life.

Tragically, not all such decisions turn out as well. Although there are many fine long-term care facilities in this country, with dedicated staff who show care and concern for each of the residents, there are many more facilities where the quality of care takes a back seat to maximization of profit for the owners of the facility.  Predictably, the result is often poor care, neglect, and injury to residents stemming directly from lack of help and proper nursing attention.

I have spent and am committed to spend in the future, a significant percentage of time in my law practice advocating for enhanced care and additional legal safeguards for nursing home residents.  I also devote time to educating the public, by way of seminars, free counseling and information packets, about what each of us can do to improve the care of our nation’s nursing home residents in the future.

I have always believed that the hallmark of dignity and honor of any society can be determined by how that society treats its most vulnerable–the young, the elderly, and the disabled.  When I see nursing home clients who have suffered decubitus ulcers that have eroded flesh to the bone, or find that a client has suffered from malnutrition or dehydration, I am left to wonder how any entity or person can place so little value on human life, despite the professed commitment to provide for all of the needs of that resident.

It is my goal, as an advocate for nursing home residents and their families, to seek fair and just compensation for those who suffer injury as a result of such neglect or abuse. Please feel free to contact our office with any questions you may have regarding the legal rights of nursing home residents.
